ARE SULFATES IN SHAMPOOS BAD FOR HAIR?

It’s a question you’ve probably heard a lot lately – are sulfates in shampoo bad for your hair? Technically, no. Sulfates in your shampoo can be just as gentle on your hair as sulfate-free alternatives. It all depends on how the ingredients in the formula work together to clean the excess oil, dirt and residue from the surface of your hair. Sulfates can still do this without stripping hair of its natural nutrients. But it takes good science to get it right. If you’re wondering whether you should use or avoid sulfates and looking to the ingredient list for clues, the answer is not always straightforward. The ingredient list doesn’t tell you if the formula has the science that gets it right. So, read on for tips to help you make that decision.

What Are Sulfates

Sulfates are a cleansing ingredient. Depending on the overall goal of the product– moisture, dandruff, repair – the combination of ingredients and types of sulfates used [TJ1] will vary. If you’re someone who struggles with oily hair, shampoos with sulfates can help give you the refresh you’re looking for while also being kind to your hair.

However, for those who prefer to avoid sulfates, Pantene has great options in our Nutrients Blends Collection – nutrient-rich products free of parabens, dyes and mineral oil. Our Nutrient Blends Hydrating Glow Shampoo and Conditioner is sulfate-free and can give your hair a refreshing look and feel using all the ingredients you love, and none of the ones you don’t. With products like these, you can get the cleansing lather your hair craves with the nutrients it truly needs.

When Should You Avoid Sulfates?

Typically, those with drier hair types, like color-treated hair and curly hair, avoid sulfates. These hair types are in extra need of moisture because either the harsh coloring process or the natural twists and turns of curly hair can leave them feeling as dry as straw. If this sounds familiar, go for a sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo, like Pantene’s Hydrating Glow Shampoo, and always follow with a moisturizing conditioner or hair treatment.

Here’s an easy rule of thumb: If your hair and scalp tend to be greasy, sulfates can make that refresh easy (especially with a brand like Pantene, backed by decades of science). If moisture is your hair’s biggest plea, opt for sulfate-free.

Regardless, what’s most important is to find the product you trust that will give you what you need for your hair - moisture, strength, volume, etc. There are tons of great products that are still good for your hair (yes, even with sulfates). Unless you have a desire to avoid them, shampoos with sulfates can be incorporated into your hair routine, no stress necessary.
