HOW TO GET RID OF SPLIT ENDS
AND WHAT CAUSES THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Split ends: everyone gets them, nobody loves them. They can make your formerly tame mane look wild, frizzy, and uneven, and can actually hurt the overall health of your strands. Whether your split ends are from hitting the heating tools too hard or just going a little longer than strictly advised between trims, we’ve got the guide to help you get your ends back in tip-top shape.
What are split ends?
Split ends are exactly what they sound like! When your hair becomes brittle and dry, the shaft can start to split. This split begins at the ends of your hair and travels upward, and may appear only on certain strands – usually the ones near the top of your head, where you tend to get the most damage.
To see if you have split ends, inspect your ends under good lighting. You should be able to see shafts splitting into a “Y” shape. See them? Don’t worry, most people have them. We can get them back to good health in no time.
What causes split ends?
The environment: From whipping winds to the hot sun, your hair can take a beating in the great outdoors.
Styling: Bleach, color, and hot styling tools can all cause your hair to get dry and brittle, making you more susceptible to split ends. Even tight ponytails can cause breakage, living your strands vulnerable to splitting.
Rough treatment: Even when we’re trying our best to keep our hair healthy, we could accidentally be causing damage. Over-washing and towel drying are two of the leading causes of split ends.
How to fix split ends
#1: Prevent damage in the first place. We know this is easier said than done, but if you recognized bad habits above, you may want to change up your routine and give your hair a little rest.
#2: Get a trim. Once you have split ends, there’s no way to get rid of them without trimming them off. Go for a quick trim, or a whole new hairstyle, so you can help your strands look and feel healthy. Even if you lose a few inches, it will be worth it in the long run when you feel healthier hair with less breakage.
