WHAT IS MY NATURAL HAIR TYPE?

There’s pride in knowing what you have and where you want to take it. Finding your natural hair type can help amplify your curls and take your texture to new lengths. Have a hair type that’s naturally curly and coily? Discover just how amazing your natural hair truly is according to its distinct traits and tremendous versatility.

Natural hair type chart

Say hello to the natural hair type chart. Also known as a part of the hair typing system, it is a classification chart that categorizes different textures and curl patterns of natural hair. From 3a to 4c, there are specifically two main hair types when it comes to naturals: 3 - Curly and 4 - Coily/Kinky. Each also has its own type of texture of a, b, or c that classifies its unique set of characteristics and traits. As for naturals, the higher the number and letter, the curlier the hair and tighter the coil. Take a quick look at the reference chart below to identify your natural hair type pattern.

Types of natural hair textures

Now that you have a better understanding of the natural hair type chart, it’s time to find where your hair falls within textures. This can be identified by certain attributes of your hair. Starting with type 3 natural hair, down to type 4, read on to discover your natural hair’s beautiful distinguishing characteristics:

Type 3 natural hair traits

  • Type 3A: Loose curls with a well-defined "S" pattern

  • Type 3B: Springy, tighter curls that may have a combination of "S" and "C" patterns

  • Type 3C: Corkscrew curls with a more defined "C" pattern and high density

Best products to use

From big, loopy 3a curls to tighter 3c curls that may even be on the coily side, one thing is for certain, all types can benefit from products that can hydrate, prevent frizz, and remove product build up. To restore moisture to your hair and keep your curls looking great, try Pantene’s Gold Series Curl Awakening Spray for finer curls and Pantene’s Gold Series Hydrating Butter-Crème for slightly thicker coils.

Type 4 natural hair traits

  • Type 4A: Tightly coiled curls with a defined "S" pattern and high density

  • Type 4B: Z-shaped coils that may appear less defined and more tightly coiled

  • Type 4C: Highly coiled or kinky hair that may not have a distinct curl pattern and can shrink significantly in length

Best products to use

Notable for the most springy 4a curls to the tightest 4c curl pattern on the chart, all 4's can benefit from as much moisture as possible. The Pantene’s Gold Series Miracle Detangler not only helps to detangle for manageability, but it’s infused with argan oil to provide the ultimate moisturized softness.

So… who doesn’t love their hair when it’s fresh, easy-breezy, and manageable? Understanding your hair type can certainly get you there by choosing the appropriate hair care products, styling techniques, and noticing how your hair responds to certain treatments. Remember that everyone's hair is unique and finding what works best for your specific hair type is the ultimate goal.
