When it comes to self-care, I am the Queen. Growing up, I really didn’t know what self-care meant. I often saw my mom taking time out for herself painting her nails and engaging in her beauty and hair routine, but I didn't know at the time that she was practicing self-care.
Some days she would bring me into her room and teach me the steps in her haircare routine so that one day I would be able to create my own haircare routine. In the African American culture, haircare routines are somewhat sacred, and many are passed down from generation to generation. I remember my mom used to do my hair in the kitchen and it was our time to connect with one another and have our girl talk. Looking back on it now I cherish those moments.
Now that I have a daughter of my own, teaching her self-care is super important to me. I am grateful that I can teach her the importance of a self-care routine while also passing down our unique “Hairtage” and haircare routine.
